Xiaolu arrived from China to Calgary in 2022 and was happy to receive valuable support from Immigrant Services Calgary (ISC).

Xiaolu’s positive experience with ISC inspired him to volunteer and give back as a thank you to the organization that helped him on his settlement journey.

He joined ISC’s volunteer team in October 2024 and has contributed up to 76 hours at the Interpretation & Translation Centre, where he provides language support to other newcomers.

The most rewarding part of Xiaolu’s volunteering experience is connecting with others, listening to their stories and being part of their journeys. He says, “Seeing newcomers gain confidence, overcome challenges, and smile makes volunteering worthwhile.”

Mihaela Turtureanu, the Interpretation & Translation Centre manager at ISC, describes Xiaolu as an asset to the team. “Xiaolu is an exceptional volunteer who has made a remarkable difference at the Interpretation & Translation Centre.”

Xiaolu encourages others to consider volunteering because it offers a sense of purpose and connection.
