Spotlight on Achievement Under 35: Celebrating Remarkable Immigrant Contributions
At Immigrant Services Calgary, we believe in honouring the remarkable contributions of immigrants and refugees to our vibrant and diverse community—which is why we launched the celebratory Immigrants of Distinction Awards (IDA) gala in 1997. Over 20 years later, this annual awards ceremony continues to bring hundreds of community and business leaders together to celebrate Calgary’s change-makers.
In our series of blogs highlighting the past year's award recipients, we begin with the Achievement Under 35 category. This award celebrates the accomplishments of immigrants or refugees under the age of 35 who have demonstrated remarkable success and significant achievements in their chosen career paths in a relatively short period of time.
Meet Iman Bukhari: An Advocate for Anti-Racism and Racial Equity
The winner of the 2023 IDA in the Achievement Under 35 category is Iman Bukhari. Originally from Pakistan, Iman immigrated to Canada in 2001. With a deep passion for promoting racial equity and understanding, Iman embarked on a journey to create positive change in her community.
At just 19 years old, Iman founded the Canadian Cultural Mosaic Foundation (CCMF), a grassroots not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving race relations and helping create a more equitable and inclusive society in Calgary. Under Iman's leadership, CCMF has undertaken impactful initiatives to address racism and discrimination, including the development of an online resource hub for kindergarten to Grade 12 teachers.
Iman's dedication and tireless advocacy have garnered recognition both locally and nationally. She has been recognized with the Queen Elizabeth Jubilee Medal and awarded the Top 40 under 40 by Avenue Magazine. Her efforts are also inspiring others to join the movement for social justice and equality.
