Olha Batiuk- Volunteer of the Month for October 2024

Originally from Ukraine, Olha moved to Canada in 2022. Like many newcomers, she was unsure how to settle into a new country successfully.

Realizing she needed help, she searched for organizations that provide support services to newcomers and discovered Immigrant Services Calgary (ISC).

At ISC, Olha, along with her family and friends, completed their English language assessments, received career planning support, and general support for settling in.

Olha was particularly impressed by the variety of languages that ISC offers to its clients. As someone who speaks Ukrainian and Russian, she was surprised to receive support in her preferred language.

Inspired by her positive experience, Olha joined ISC’s volunteer team in April 2024. Since then, she has completed over 166 hours with the Client Care Representative team.

Abdallah Abushammala, Client Care Manager at ISC, has observed Olha’s positive energy and dedication.  He said, “Whether she’s helping a newcomer or supporting the team, Olha always brings her best.”

Olha plans to continue volunteering at ISC because she enjoys the professional and friendly atmosphere. She also enjoys talking to clients and helping them with translation when necessary. Seeing a smile on others’ faces is always a highlight for her.

She encourages others to consider volunteering, as it helps create a supportive and safe society for everyone. She emphasizes that it does not have to be a grand gesture because “a little help makes a big difference and can make someone feel better about their immigration journey.”
