Literacy and Volunteering Program

The purpose of this program is to help newcomers develop essential literacy skills and apply these skills through community volunteering projects. Literacy is the ability to read and write, but it is also much more than that! It also teaches newcomers how to engage and interact with the world. Therefore, what students learn in class will be used as the basis for making informed decisions in a real world context.

In this class, students will learn about:

  • Civic Engagement
  • Why Volunteering is Important
  • Developing Personal Goals
  • Networking
  • Practice Writing Job Applications
  • How to Prepare for a Job Interview
  • Participate in Mock Job Interviews
  • How to Express an Opinion and Create an Argument
  • How to Access Community Resources
  • And much more!
