Volunteer

Volunteers are an integral part of the programs and services at ISC. Our team of volunteers is made up of 700 volunteers that speak more than 70 languages. As a volunteer, whether you are accompanying a client to an important doctor’s appointment, coaching an individual on how to write a resume or helping our staff in the office, you will be contributing to the successful integration of immigrants and refugees to the Calgary community.

If you are looking to meet new people and build strong social networks, share your skills or learn new ones or gain experience in the Canadian workforce, we encourage you to get involved

Currently, we offer the following volunteer positions:

Interpreter

Provides verbal interpretation for clients and institutions in various settings such as medical, legal, social, educational, and others

Translator

Translates written material such as legal documents, flyers, brochures, press releases, and others from English to another language or vice versa

Employment coach

Supports newcomer job seekers in achieving their career and employment goals such as guiding through effective job search strategies; helping with résumé/cover letter writing; enhancing interview skills, and others

Community volunteer

Participates in community-based projects, activities, and local initiatives. A community volunteer also assists ISC with special event functions and fundraising initiatives as well as promotional activities

Children’s program volunteer

Assists ISC staff in facilitating children’s activities such as reading circles, crafts, playing, singing, dancing, and others. This role may also include helping with setting-up and cleaning-up, preparing healthy snacks, childminding, assisting with workshops and other tasks

Seniors’ program volunteer

Provides assistance to immigrant seniors while they are adapting to their new life in Canada. The tasks may include interpretation and support services, workshop assistance, community outreach, and others

Tutor

Provides tutoring in school subjects to immigrant/refugee learners in grades 1-12 to improve their academic skills and study habits

Office and workshop support volunteer

Assists ISC staff with a variety of clerical duties and provides help during workshops and training sessions

Currently, we are recuriting the following positions:

Youth Mentee

  • Permanent Resident/ Convention Refugee status
  • Age 12-20

 

Translator

Provide translation of documents that accurately reflects the meaning of the source text.

Requirements:

  • Fluency in written English (CLB 7 or above)
  • Fluency in reading and writing in one or more of the following languages: Amharic, Tigrinya, Vietnamese, Ukrainian, Polish, French (native)
Employment coach

Supports newcomer job seekers in achieving their career and employment goals such as guiding through effective job search strategies; helping with résumé/cover letter writing; enhancing interview skills, and others

Volunteer youth mentor

Volunteer Youth Mentors interact and connect with youth to aid them in developing strategies to succeed. Mentors will work with groups of 3-4 mentees to support them in different areas like effective communication, bullying, stereotyping, perceived gender ideals, and cultural biases

Tutor

Provides tutoring in school subjects to immigrant/refugee learners in grades 1-12 to improve their academic skills and study habits

Languages

I would like to share with you that I got a new work now as HR Administrator and I would like to thank you for the opportunity to volunteer as a workshop facilitator. I really believe that the opportunity helped me to get back to my career; it helped me to restore my confidence and my soft skills. I also believe that it gave me that Canadian professional experience that's been challenging me to get back to my career.
