Canada Unveils New Pathway for Skilled Workers in High-Demand Professions to Become Permanent Residents
On May 31, 2023, the Government of Canada announced its first-ever launch of category-based selection for Canada's flagship economic immigration management system, Express Entry. This new approach allows Canada to issue invitations to apply for permanent residency to prospective individuals with specific skills, training, or language proficiency.
In response to the pressing need for employers to fill numerous vacant positions nationwide, immigration emerges as a vital solution. Recognizing this reality, the Government of Canada is dedicated to building an immigration system that acts as a catalyst for growth, empowers businesses, addresses labour needs, and strengthens French communities. These combined efforts will ensure long-term economic and social prosperity for all Canadians.
This year, category-based selection invitations will focus on candidates who have:
- a strong French language proficiency or
- work experience in the following fields:
- healthcare
- science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
- trades, such as carpenters, plumbers, and contractors
- transport
- agriculture and agri-food
Further details regarding the timing of invitations and application procedures for individual categories will be unveiled in the coming weeks.
The implementation of category-based selection in Express Entry marks a significant step towards aligning Canada's economic and labour market needs. This approach builds upon the successful high human capital model that has defined Canada's economic immigration system. By prioritizing skilled workers who possess the potential to integrate and contribute to the country's future, category-based selection strengthens the foundation of Canada's prosperity.
