Gabriela Navarro – Volunteer of the Month for April 2025
Gabriela, originally from Venezuela, arrived in Calgary in 2009 with her husband and two young children. Adjusting to a new country with different languages, culture, and weather presented challenges, but Gabriela and her family found their footing with the support of Immigrant Services Calgary (ISC).
ISC's assistance extended beyond Gabriela's immediate family, helping her sisters' families and parents settle in Canada. This experience inspired Gabriela to give back to the community that had supported her.
"I am grateful for my volunteer experience because I strive to help others facing similar challenges and hard times," Gabriela shares. "I encourage others to make a difference through volunteering. A simple smile of hope, a simple touch of support, a few words of strength can turn a life around."
Gabriela believes that volunteering is a continuous cycle of helping and learning, where supporting others not only aids them but also enriches one's own life.
Abdallah Abushammala, Senior Manager of Client Care & CLARC at ISC, commends Gabriela's contributions: "Gabriela's warmth, dedication, and attention to detail have made a meaningful difference in the lives of the newcomers we serve. Her commitment to creating a welcoming space is a true reflection of the values we uphold in Client Care."
Thank you, Gabriela, for your dedication and compassion. Your efforts make a significant difference in the lives of newcomers to Canada.
