Belete Bantero Bassa-Volunteer of the Month for September 2024

Originally from Ethiopia, Belete arrived in Canada in June 2023.

Being an enthusiastic volunteer, and one who has adopted it as a lifestyle, Belete wasted no time in identifying volunteering opportunities shortly after he arrived in Canada.

A staff member introduced him to Immigrant Services Calgary (ISC), and he decided to join the volunteer team.

Since joining the team in May 2024, Belete has completed over 37 hours of volunteer time. He volunteers as a fitness facilitator for the Seniors Fitness Club in the Community Initiatives for Immigrant Seniors Program (CISP); an ISC initiative which helps senior immigrants and refugees adapt to life in Canada.

Parminder Gill, Gateway Newcomer Planner for the Seniors Program, expressed her appreciation for Belete's passion and dedication to helping the seniors in the program. She said, "His heart and passion make a difference every day, and we are grateful for all he does."

Belete enjoys coordinating fitness programs for the CISP participants and helping them stay active.  He affirms that volunteering offers him a sense of purpose and community connection. "Volunteering helps me explore other cultures and boosts my confidence," he said.

Belete suggests that others should consider volunteering for the same reasons he does—personal and professional growth. Lastly, he recommends that volunteering can provide the younger generation with an opportunity to gain meaningful work experience before they secure actual jobs.
