At Immigrant Services Calgary, we believe in honouring the remarkable contributions of immigrants and refugees to our vibrant and diverse community—which is why we launched the celebratory Immigrants of Distinction Awards (IDA) gala in 1997. Over 20 years later, this annual awards ceremony continues to bring hundreds of community and business leaders together to celebrate Calgary’s change-makers.

In our series of blogs highlighting the past year's award recipients, we turn our focus to the Community Service category. This award recognizes an immigrant or refugee who has provided outstanding community service to the city of Calgary and immigrant communities in a volunteer capacity.

Meet Lemlem Haile: A Champion for Human Rights and Social Justice

The winner of the 2023 IDA in the Community Service category is Lemlem Haile. Originally from Eritrea, Lemlem has been a Canadian resident since 1991. With nearly three decades of unwavering dedication to community service, Lemlem has made significant strides in promoting human rights and social justice.

Lemlem played an instrumental role in developing and facilitating public education initiatives focused on anti-racism and anti-colonialism. She is also a founding member of the award-winning volunteer-led professional group, Social Workers for Social Justice (SWSJ). Her advocacy work extends beyond Canadian borders, emphasizing global citizenship and the rights of migrant workers.

Through mentorship, research, and community building, Lemlem has demonstrated exceptional commitment to Calgary's diverse communities.
