Integrated Women’s Mentorship Program Celebrates Success

Calgary, AB, Friday, June 18, 2010 --- After four months of intense mentorship, the Integrated Women’s Mentorship Program at Immigrant Services Calgary will be hosting a wrap-up mentorship appreciation event on Wednesday, June 23, 2010. The event will celebrate the successes and achievements of the hard working volunteer mentors and their mentees over the last four months. 23 out of 30 participants in the Integrated Women’s Mentorship Program found meaningful employment during their mentorship or returned to school. The event will share success stories of participants, and include entertainment and refreshments.

“Thanks to your help and [My mentor’s] support with my professional goals I finally got a permanent job where I wanted,” Stated participant Vanessa Ricarte. The program was also beneficial to mentors, as one related: “I was very impressed with the smile of my mentee on her face during introduction; her effort to understand different language and genuine enjoyment of the presentation were highlights of my day.” The touching stories and successes of the mentorship program have held deep meaning for everyone involved, including mentors and mentees, program staff, funders and community partners.

Immigrant women can face significant barriers to finding employment in their fields in Canada. A Statistics Canada report released in 2006 found a13% unemployment rate for immigrant women aged 25-54, compared to 4.6% for women born in Canada and 10% for immigrant men in the same category. The Integrated Women’s Mentorship Program is designed to help immigrant women overcome those barriers and prepare for a professional career in Canada with the guidance of a mentor in their professional field. In the last 4 months, the mentor-mentee pairs have covered issues related to employment in Canada, from learning about soft skills and networking to overcoming language barriers and learning about obtaining recognition for foreign credentials. Altogether, mentors have provided over 675 hours of their time over the full nine months of the program.
