Community Consultation: Financial Literacy and Economic Outlook for Newcomers in Canada
Calgary, AB, Thursday, September 16, 2010 --- You are invited to join Immigrant Services Calgary on September 23, 2010, for a community consultation on Financial Literacy and Economic Outlook for Newcomers in Canada with keynote address by Craig Alexander, Senior Vice President & Chief Economist at the TD Bank Financial Group and a panel of financial experts. A noted economist with over seventeen years of experience, Mr. Alexander travels across Canada and the United States speaking about economic trends and analysis, and is currently the President of the Canadian Association for Business Economics. New Canadians face a variety of barriers as they settle into Canada. These barriers include the significant costs of resettling, confusion about a new culture, and a new financial system. This can make financial matters difficult and leave newcomer populations vulnerable.
As the economic outlook in Canada continues to be uncertain, a better educated and more financially literate populace will be an asset to our economy and to our financial sector. While financial institutions as well as immigrant serving agencies attempt to provide relevant financial knowledge to newcomers, full financial literacy remains an issue. With expert guidance and a committed partnership between the financial institutions and Immigrant Services Calgary, we are hoping to disseminate knowledge and support, and reduce the vulnerabilities new immigrants face.
