Volunteer of the Month - March 2015
The Volunteer of the month is Miroslav Reljic! Miroslav is an extraordinary addition to ISC’s volunteer team and we are grateful for all of his outstanding contributions!
Miroslav Reljic was born and grew up in Croatia in a school teacher’s family that always believed in compassion and empowering people. As a Serbian teenager, Miroslav had to quickly flee Croatia in the summer of 1995 since the civil war was getting out of control. “The only possession I had when I left Croatia was the flip flops, t-shirt, shorts and the family album”. For the next 4 years he lived as a refugee in Pristina, Kosovo, and in the capital of Serbia, Belgrade.
In June 1999, in his last semester at the University of Belgrade, he was accepted as a stateless person into Canada. “It was a tough decision to stop my Economics studies as I have invested so much time and effort into it”. Canadian visa offered him hope and he decided to stop his studies and start a new life in Canada. “Though I didn’t speak a word of English, I was adamant to finish my university education in Canada. I took intensive full-time English classes for 2 years at MRU and worked various part-time jobs in retail shops and with autistic teenagers.”
Today, Miroslav is a recognized expert in Workforce Training & Development, SAP Training and Implementation and Management of Change.
He is consulting to top Canadian Oil and Gas Companies on how to implement effective coaching techniques and training methods to achieve change in their business processes by utilizing the human capital to its fullest potential. He holds a BA degree in Economics, from the University of Calgary (2004) and a Coaching Certificate of Participation from the University of Cambridge (2014).
His passion for helping others ignited his willingness to give back to the community. In 2013, he began volunteering as an Employee Coach at the Immigrants Service Calgary (ISC). Miroslav is currently holding once a month ‘Coach the Coach’ workshops at ISC on Resume Write-up and Interview, Networking and Cultural & Diversity strategies for newcomers and Canadians.
