Volunteer of the Month - March 2014
Office Support Volunteers are an integral part of ISC’s volunteer team. By assisting staff with general administrative tasks, office support volunteers contribute to the operations of ISC while gaining experience and becoming familiar with Canadian workplace culture.
Sahar Roshani has been one of our outstanding office support volunteers. Below is her story:
I immigrated to Canada from Iran with my husband, looking for better opportunities. When we landed in Canada, we came to Calgary directly to begin our new life. Actually, the only support that we had in Calgary, were our friends who previously immigrated here. When we got here, our life suddenly changed with living in a new culture, and I couldn’t speak English fluently. Also, I had a Master of Science in Civil Engineering with more than 10 years experiences in back home; however, my biggest problem was learning the new language and gaining soft skills through getting Canadian experience to achieve my career goal.
Indeed, I had done many volunteer activities in my country before we came to Canada and I had enthusiasm to continue volunteering here too. I first heard of Immigrant Services Calgary from our friends. Then I decided to be a translator and Office Support volunteer with ISC to have a chance to contribute in a multicultural society and gain experience by meeting new people from different cultures and backgrounds and helping them.
Now, I am studying at Bow Valley College (BVC) as an English as a Second Language student to improve my language skills. I have done volunteer activities at BVC as a mentor to help other immigrants who want to study English to achieve their goals and I feel happy for helping them. I think volunteering is a strong tool for anybody to get integrated into a Canadian society.
I enjoy every minute volunteering for ISC; I am grateful for being able to help immigrants and I am grateful for people who guided me and informed me about Canadian society and gave me new opportunities to learn and experience more. I appreciate all employees and other volunteers at ISC who are very friendly and they try to inform and help immigrants like me to be successful and to be a part of this community. I am very lucky to be with people at ISC who are very patient and very friendly.
I know that helping people makes it easier to be successful.I have decided to continue volunteering in various places, especially at ISC.
I sincerely hope that every immigrant who comes to Canada will find happiness and success in this beautiful country.
Congratulations Sahar for being selected as Volunteer of the Month!
