Natalie Cuei is ISC’s volunteer of the month!
As an active participant of the Youth Volunteer Program (YVP), Natalie volunteers with other civically engaged youth to give back to the community. She also contributes her talents and leadership skills as a mentor to newcomer youth within the YVP.
In 2007, Natalie and her family arrived in Canada from Taiwan with the hope of building a better future. In n June 2013 Natalie’s family decided to move to Calgary from Prince Edward Island and search for new opportunities. Leaving Taiwan and coming to Canada was definitely a challenge for Natalia.
“When I first moved here, I was in a class of nineteen, eighteen students. They were Canadian and I was the only Taiwanese/Asian child," she says. “I felt like an alien but I soon overcame it, and I slowly made friends and volunteered to help my classmates with their schoolwork.”
Natalie soon found that volunteering was a positive way for her to actively participate in the community. Over the last three months, she has devoted more than 70 hours of volunteer work and has shown great enthusiasm in further engaging in volunteer and community events.
Recalling her journey, Natalie says: “After I moved to Calgary from Prince Edward Island, I knew I wanted to get involved with such huge community. I was at the ISC office when I saw the flyer for the YVP, and I knew immediately I want to be a part of it. I encouraged my brother to join with me. I wanted to be a part of this amazing program because of the experience that I will gain, to understand and become familiar with my environment/community, to meet new friends and people, and simply just because I love helping people and giving my time to others. To us it may only be a couple hours, but the effects are profoundly rewarding to others. I am grateful for this youth program and I feel fortunate to be a part of this remarkable program.”
Natalie is a great asset to the YVP. She brings a wealth of talents and skills, and we are happy to see her contribute to make Canada a more welcoming place for newcomer youth. Congratulations, Natalie!
